Saltpans

"Since 2006, I have documented every stage and social aspect of salt production in Mauritius, particularly in the historic salt pans of Black River and Tamarin. These sites, once central to artisanal salt production, were the scene of demanding work, dictated by the seasons and the whims of the climate. Under a scorching sun, the salt workers toiled tirelessly, harvesting salt by hand in intense heat, making every movement even more challenging.

Over the years, modernization and competition have led to the closure of many salt pans in Mauritius. Today, only the Tamarin salt pan remains operational, continuing to preserve this ancestral craft of salt production despite the challenges. This last bastion of the salt-making profession stands as a testament to the resilience and dedication of the workers, who continue to extract the 'salt of sweat,' while safeguarding a unique cultural heritage of the island of Mauritius."
